Grace: Wheelchair athlete doesn't dwell on closed doors; he's pushed open many others

Mike Kult is taking me on a building tour when, suddenly, a closed door appears. I panic at the protocol.

Do I let him get the door because he is my host at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and he's a man, and this is still a social convention I follow?

Or do I rush to open the door to spare him the reach — he IS in a wheelchair. And good grief, how many doors are there in UNO's massive, redone athletic building

NWBA Summer Wheelchair Basketball Camp

The NWBA has recently received funding to assist in hosting 3 summer camps during 2013.  These summer camps will provide an introduction for some and elite instruction for others in the sport of wheelchair basketball.  Interested participants planning on attending this camp will participate in a variety of drills focusing on individual development and team concepts.  The head instructor  for the camps will range from the NWBA’s elite coaches at the International level and Intercollegiate Division level.  Camp instructors will be from the USA Wheelchair Basketball Program or a NWBA Intercollegiate Division Program.

Congratulations to the 20 men selected to the 2013 USA Men's Team.  The team will be cut to 12 by July 1st.  The final 12 will compete in Bogota, Colombia August 4-11 in the America's Zone World Qualifier.

USA Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team is in Warm Springs, GA this week for a team training camp and friendly competitions against Germany.  Both teams brought a pool of athletes that were split up into 2 teams to allow for more games for development of both sides.  Scores will be posted as the become available.  Click on the box scores below to review game results.

Registration for the University of Illinois Summer Wheelchair Basketball Camps is still open.  There are still spots available for the Elite Camp, which will be held June 26-July 1, but registration will be capped at 30 participants so if you are interested, please register soon! Our Individual Skills Camp will be held July 5-9, and spots are still available for this camp as well.

Edinboro University will be hosting there 13th Junior Wheelchair Basketball Camp and it will be under the direction of Head Coach Jim Glatch. Glatch will be entering his 19th season as Head Coach of the Fighting Scots Wheelchair Basketball Team. This year’s camp will take on a new twist.

We will be offering this camp as a team camp. It is intended for both players and coaches to attend to work on their team for the upcoming season. Team Camp will offer three components. The first will be practice sessions that will permit players and coaches to prepare for the upcoming season with Coach Glatch and his staff. The second component will be team competition with a camp champion being crowned at the end. The third component will be a daily coaches clinic for the teams coaches with Coach Glatch on fundamentals of the game and coaching wheelchair basketball. This year’s camp will be open to all NWBA Junior teams in the Junior Varsity and Varsity levels. Housing for the Edinboro Camp will be in an on campus Residence Hall that has staff supervision. All meals will be held in the Van Houton Dining Hall and are included in the price of camp.

The University of Alabama Adapted Athletics is hosting a men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball camp this summer from June 19-22. The camp will include intensive 2-3 teaching sessions a day as well as elective activities in wheelchair tennis, adapted golf and adapted rowing. The cost of the camp is $450 per person. To sign up just visit www.alabamaadapted.com and click on the summer camp tab for men’s or women’s basketball. You can complete your application and pay online. See you this summer! The University of Missouri will host their wheelchair basketball camp July 7-11, 2013. The camp is for males and females ages 12-19 with a permanent disability of the lower extremity. The camp focuses on individual fundamental skill development and strategies in team play. Head Coach Ron Lykins and the High Performance Committee have selected 28 athletes to compete for a spot in the pool of 18 for the 2013 men's team.  The 18 athletes will be considered for 1 of 12 spots for the 2013 USA Men's Wheelchair Basketball World Qualifier Team.
