NWBA ANNOUNCES USA MEN’S WHEELCHAIR
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., January 6, 2014 – After four days of competitive tryouts, the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) has announced the 16-man roster that will represent USA Men’s Wheelchair Basketball throughout 2014. The roster will eventually be narrowed down to 12 players to compete in the World Championships in Incheon, South Korea this July.
Throughout the weekend the focus was on teamwork and chemistry, and Head Coach Ron Lykins plans to emphasize that theme moving forward. “We had a lot of great individual players, but in choosing this team, chemistry was the deciding factor. We want guys who can play a role, are willing step up to help the team in any way they can, and guys who will always put the team first. We feel that we have the best chance for success with these sixteen players together.”
Steve Serio, a member of the 16-man roster, extended that team mentality to the entire coaching and support staff. “Ron sets a really high bar,” he explained, “and that standard of excellence has definitely trickled down. Being with the team and having the support from the athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches and nutritionists has definitely replenished my motivation. The goal is to bring home gold in South Korea and we are going to work hard to achieve that goal.”
One step closer to Incheon, the team will be back in action in about a month. They will have a training camp at the Olympic Training Center in the middle of February.
