The Road to Nationals: Meet the Windy City Warriors

The Windy City Warriors are no strangers to success. A couple of weeks ago, the small but mighty team of seven players won their 6th consecutive state title at the Illinois High School Association State Tournament in Peoria, IL. This championship was their 9th title in 10 years.

While the Warriors have been a dominant regional force, they have their sights set on something bigger: a national title at the NWBA National Tournament in Louisville next weekend.

The team is seeded fifth in the tournament, and much of their success is attributed to strong leadership. With four dynamic and talented seniors at the helm, head coach Robb Taylor believes that his team is ready to take home the championship.

“We have four seniors that have played for us for a number of years so they really understand what needs to be done. They know how to step up and lead the team,” he says. All seniors are looking to play at the college level moving forward, and at least one is currently with the Chicago Wheelchair Bulls.

On top of great leadership and talent, the team’s overall experience playing other nationally ranked teams will help them down the stretch. “The fact that these guys have played a lot of top teams this year will help them in that they know what to expect. We can tailor our game plan at the tournament based on what we know of the other teams,” Taylor explains.

While most players on the close-knit team have experienced the exciting nature of the National Tournament, one first year player, Tim Culbertson will be making his first appearance at the tournament this year.

Taylor is excited to share the experience with his younger players, and believes that his team will thrive in the high-intensity environment in Louisville. The Warriors have upped their practice schedule to prepare for their 2014 National debut, and are counting the days until they can perform on a bigger stage. Illinois has been their stomping grounds, and they are ready to break out on the national level.
